32 And G2532 they came G2064 to G1519 a place G5564 which G3739 was named G3686 Gethsemane: G1068 and G2532 he saith G3004 to his G846 disciples, G3101 Sit ye G2523 here, G5602 while G2193 I shall pray. G4336
Then G5119 cometh G2064 Jesus G2424 with G3326 them G846 unto G1519 a place G5564 called G3004 Gethsemane, G1068 and G2532 saith G3004 unto the disciples, G3101 Sit ye G2523 here, G847 while G2193 G3757 I go G565 and pray G4336 yonder. G1563 And G2532 he took with him G3880 Peter G4074 and G2532 the two G1417 sons G5207 of Zebedee, G2199 and began G756 to be sorrowful G3076 and G2532 very heavy. G85 Then G5119 saith he G3004 unto them, G846 My G3450 soul G5590 is G2076 exceeding sorrowful, G4036 even unto G2193 death: G2288 tarry ye G3306 here, G5602 and G2532 watch G1127 with G3326 me. G1700 And G2532 he went G4281 a little G3397 further, G4281 and fell G4098 on G1909 his G846 face, G4383 and G2532 prayed, G4336 saying, G3004 O my G3450 Father, G3962 if G1487 it be G2076 possible, G1415 let G3928 this G5124 cup G4221 pass G3928 from G575 me: G1700 nevertheless G4133 not G3756 as G5613 I G1473 will, G2309 but G235 as G5613 thou G4771 wilt. And G2532 he cometh G2064 unto G4314 the disciples, G3101 and G2532 findeth G2147 them G846 asleep, G2518 and G2532 saith G3004 unto Peter, G4074 What, G3779 could ye G2480 not G3756 watch G1127 with G3326 me G1700 one G3391 hour? G5610 Watch G1127 and G2532 pray, G4336 that G3363 ye enter G1525 not G3363 into G1519 temptation: G3986 the spirit G4151 indeed G3303 is willing, G4289 but G1161 the flesh G4561 is weak. G772 He went away G565 again G3825 the G1537 second time, G1208 and prayed, G4336 saying, G3004 O my G3450 Father, G3962 if G1487 this G5124 cup G4221 may G1410 not G3756 pass away G3928 from G575 me, G1700 except G3362 I drink G4095 it, G846 thy G4675 will G2307 be done. G1096 And G2532 he came G2064 and found G2147 them G846 asleep G2518 again: G3825 for G1063 their G846 eyes G3788 were G2258 heavy. G916 And G2532 he left G863 them, G846 and went away G565 again, G3825 and prayed G4336 G1537 the third time, G5154 saying G2036 the same G846 words. G3056 Then G5119 cometh he G2064 to G4314 his G846 disciples, G3101 and G2532 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Sleep on G2518 now, G3063 and G2532 take your rest: G373 behold, G2400 the hour G5610 is at hand, G1448 and G2532 the Son G5207 of man G444 is betrayed G3860 into G1519 the hands G5495 of sinners. G268 Rise, G1453 let us be going: G71 behold, G2400 he is at hand G1448 that doth betray G3860 me. G3165
The sorrows H2256 of hell H7585 compassed me about: H5437 the snares H4170 of death H4194 prevented H6923 me. In my distress H6862 I called H7121 upon the LORD, H3068 and cried H7768 unto my God: H430 he heard H8085 my voice H6963 out of his temple, H1964 and my cry H7775 came H935 before H6440 him, even into his ears. H241
[[To the chief Musician H5329 upon Aijeleth H365 Shahar, H7837 A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 My God, H410 my God, H410 why hast thou forsaken H5800 me? why art thou so far H7350 from helping H3444 me, and from the words H1697 of my roaring? H7581 O my God, H430 I cry H7121 in the daytime, H3119 but thou hearest H6030 not; and in the night season, H3915 and am not silent. H1747
[[A Song H7892 or Psalm H4210 for the sons H1121 of Korah, H7141 to the chief Musician H5329 upon Mahalath H4257 Leannoth, H6031 Maschil H4905 of Heman H1968 the Ezrahite.]] H250 O LORD H3068 God H430 of my salvation, H3444 I have cried H6817 day H3117 and night H3915 before thee: Let my prayer H8605 come H935 before H6440 thee: incline H5186 thine ear H241 unto my cry; H7440 For my soul H5315 is full H7646 of troubles: H7451 and my life H2416 draweth nigh H5060 unto the grave. H7585
And G2532 he came out, G1831 and went, G4198 as G2596 he was wont, G1485 to G1519 the mount G3735 of Olives; G1636 and G1161 his G846 disciples G3101 also G2532 followed G190 him. G846 And G1161 when he was G1096 at G1909 the place, G5117 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Pray G4336 that ye enter G1525 not G3361 into G1519 temptation. G3986 And G2532 he G846 was withdrawn G645 from G575 them G846 about G5616 a stone's G3037 cast, G1000 and G2532 kneeled down, G5087 G1119 and prayed, G4336 Saying, G3004 Father, G3962 if G1487 thou be willing, G1014 remove G3911 this G5124 cup G4221 from G575 me: G1700 nevertheless G4133 not G3361 my G3450 will, G2307 but G235 thine, G4674 be done. G1096 And G1161 there appeared G3700 an angel G32 unto him G846 from G575 heaven, G3772 strengthening G1765 him. G846 And G2532 being G1096 in G1722 an agony G74 he prayed G4336 more earnestly: G1617 and G1161 his G846 sweat G2402 was G1096 as it were G5616 great drops G2361 of blood G129 falling down G2597 to G1909 the ground. G1093 And G2532 when he rose up G450 from G575 prayer, G4335 and was come G2064 to G4314 his G846 disciples, G3101 he found G2147 them G846 sleeping G2837 for G575 sorrow, G3077 And G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Why G5101 sleep ye? G2518 rise G450 and pray, G4336 lest G3363 ye enter G1525 into G1519 temptation. G3986
When Jesus G2424 had spoken G2036 these words, G5023 he went forth G1831 with G4862 his G846 disciples G3101 over G4008 the brook G5493 Cedron, G2748 where G3699 was G2258 a garden, G2779 into G1519 the which G3739 he G846 entered, G1525 and G2532 his G846 disciples. G3101 And G1161 Judas G2455 also, G2532 which G3588 betrayed G3860 him, G846 knew G1492 the place: G5117 for G3754 Jesus G2424 ofttimes G4178 resorted G4863 thither G1563 with G3326 his G846 disciples. G3101 Judas G2455 then, G3767 having received G2983 a band G4686 of men and G2532 officers G5257 from G1537 the chief priests G749 and G2532 Pharisees, G5330 cometh G2064 thither G1563 with G3326 lanterns G5322 and G2532 torches G2985 and G2532 weapons. G3696 Jesus G2424 therefore, G3767 knowing G1492 all things G3956 that should come G2064 upon G1909 him, G846 went forth, G1831 and said G2036 unto them, G846 Whom G5101 seek ye? G2212 They answered G611 him, G846 Jesus G2424 of Nazareth. G3480 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 I G1473 am G1510 he. And G1161 Judas G2455 also, G2532 which G3588 betrayed G3860 him, G846 stood G2476 with G3326 them. G846 As soon G5613 then G3767 as he had said G2036 unto them, G846 G3754 I G1473 am G1510 he, they went G565 backward, G1519 G3694 and G2532 fell G4098 to the ground. G5476 Then G3767 asked he G1905 them G846 again, G3825 Whom G5101 seek ye? G2212 And G1161 they said, G2036 Jesus G2424 of Nazareth. G3480 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 I have told G2036 you G5213 that G3754 I G1473 am G1510 he: if G1487 therefore G3767 ye seek G2212 me, G1691 let G863 these G5128 go their way: G5217 That G2443 the saying G3056 might be fulfilled, G4137 which G3739 he spake, G2036 G3754 Of G1537 them G846 which G3739 thou gavest G1325 me G3427 have I G3756 lost G622 none. G3762 Then G3767 Simon G4613 Peter G4074 having G2192 a sword G3162 drew G1670 it, G846 and G2532 smote G3817 the high priest's G749 servant, G1401 and G2532 cut off G609 his G846 right G1188 ear. G5621 G1161 The servant's G1401 name G3686 was G2258 Malchus. G3124 Then G3767 said G2036 Jesus G2424 unto Peter, G4074 Put up G906 thy G4675 sword G3162 into G1519 the sheath: G2336 the cup G4221 which G3739 my Father G3962 hath given G1325 me, G3427 shall I G4095 not G3378 drink G4095 it? Commentary on Mark 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter begins the account which this evangelist gives of the death and sufferings of our Lord Jesus, which we are all concerned to be acquainted, not only with the history of, but with the mystery of. Here is,
Most of which passages we had before, Mt. 26.
Mar 14:1-11
We have here instances,
Now,
Now see,
Mar 14:12-31
In these verses we have,
Now, in answer to their enquiry, Christ saith that,
But Christ encourages them with a promise that they shall rally again, shall return both to their duty and to their comfort (v. 28); "After I am risen, I will gather you in from all the places wither you are scattered, Eze. 34:12. I will go before you into Galilee, will see our friends, and enjoy one another there.'
Mar 14:32-42
Christ is here entering upon his sufferings, and begins with those which were the sorest of all his sufferings, those in his soul. Here we have him in his agony; this melancholy story we had in Matthew; this agony in soul was the wormwood and the gall in the affliction and misery; and thereby it appeared that no sorrow was forced upon him, but that it was what he freely admitted.
Now the consideration of Christ's sufferings in his soul, and his sorrows for us, should be of use to us,
As those whom Christ loves he rebukes when they do amiss, so those whom he rebukes he counsels and comforts.
Mar 14:43-52
We have here the seizing of our Lord Jesus by the officers of the chief priests. This was what his enemies had long aimed at, they had often sent to take him; but he had escaped out of their hands, because his hour was not come, nor could they now have taken him, had he not freely surrendered himself. He began first to suffer in his soul, but afterward suffered in his body, that he might satisfy for sin, which begins in the heart, but afterwards makes the members of the body instruments of unrighteousness.
Mar 14:53-65
We have here Christ's arraignment, trial, conviction, and condemnation, in the ecclesiastical court, before the great sanhedrim, of which the high priest was president, or judge of the court; the same Caiaphas that had lately adjudged it expedient he should be put to death, guilty or not guilty (Jn. 11:50), and who therefore might justly be excepted against as partial.
Mar 14:66-72
We have here the story of Peter's denying Christ.
