61 But G1161 he held his peace, G4623 and G2532 answered G611 nothing. G3762 Again G3825 the high priest G749 asked G1905 him, G846 and G2532 said G3004 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of the Blessed? G2128
But G1161 Jesus G2424 held his peace. G4623 And G2532 the high priest G749 answered G611 and said G2036 unto him, G846 I adjure G1844 thee G4571 by G2596 the living G2198 God, G2316 that G2443 thou tell G2036 us G2254 whether G1487 thou G4771 be G1488 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of God. G2316 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Thou G4771 hast said: G2036 nevertheless G4133 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Hereafter G737 G575 shall ye see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 sitting G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of power, G1411 and G2532 coming G2064 in G1909 the clouds G3507 of heaven. G3772
Therefore G1223 G5124 G3767 the Jews G2453 sought G2212 the more G3123 to kill G615 him, G846 because G3754 he G3089 not G3756 only G3440 had broken G3089 the sabbath, G4521 but G235 said G3004 also G2532 that God G2316 was his G2398 Father, G3962 making G4160 himself G1438 equal G2470 with God. G2316 Then G3767 answered G611 Jesus G2424 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 The Son G5207 can G1410 G3756 do G4160 nothing G3762 of G575 himself, G1438 but G3362 what G5100 he seeth G991 the Father G3962 do: G4160 for G1063 what things soever G3739 G302 he G1565 doeth, G4160 these G5023 also G2532 doeth G4160 the Son G5207 likewise. G3668 For G1063 the Father G3962 loveth G5368 the Son, G5207 and G2532 sheweth G1166 him G846 all things G3956 that G3739 himself G846 doeth: G4160 and G2532 he will shew G1166 him G846 greater G3187 works G2041 than G3187 these, G5130 that G2443 ye G5210 may marvel. G2296 For G1063 as G5618 the Father G3962 raiseth up G1453 the dead, G3498 and G2532 quickeneth G2227 them; even G2532 so G3779 the Son G5207 quickeneth G2227 whom G3739 he will. G2309 For G1063 G3761 the Father G3962 judgeth G2919 no man, G3762 but G235 hath committed G1325 all G3956 judgment G2920 unto the Son: G5207 That G2443 all G3956 men should honour G5091 the Son, G5207 even as G2531 they honour G5091 the Father. G3962 He that honoureth G5091 not G3361 the Son G5207 honoureth G5091 not G3756 the Father G3962 which G3588 hath sent G3992 him. G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 G3754 He that heareth G191 my G3450 word, G3056 and G2532 believeth G4100 on him that sent G3992 me, G3165 hath G2192 everlasting G166 life, G2222 and G2532 shall G2064 not G3756 come G2064 into G1519 condemnation; G2920 but G235 is passed G3327 from G1537 death G2288 unto G1519 life. G2222 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 G3754 The hour G5610 is coming, G2064 and G2532 now G3568 is, G2076 when G3753 the dead G3498 shall hear G191 the voice G5456 of the Son G5207 of God: G2316 and G2532 they that hear G191 shall live. G2198
G1487 Art G1488 thou G4771 the Christ? G5547 tell G2036 us. G2254 And G1161 he said G2036 unto them, G846 If G1437 I tell G2036 you, G5213 ye will G4100 not G3364 believe: G4100 And G1161 if G1437 I also G2532 ask G2065 you, ye will G611 not G3364 answer G611 me, G3427 nor G2228 let me go. G630 Hereafter G3568 G575 shall G2071 the Son G5207 of man G444 sit G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of the power G1411 of God. G2316 Then G1161 said G5346 they all, G3956 Art G1488 thou G4771 then G3767 the Son G5207 of God? G2316 And G1161 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Ye G5210 say G3004 that G3754 I G1473 am. G1510 And G1161 they said, G2036 What G5101 need G2192 we G5532 any further G2089 witness? G3141 for G1063 we ourselves G846 have heard G191 of G575 his own G846 mouth. G4750
And G1161 Pilate G4091 asked G1905 him G846 again, G3825 saying, G3004 Answerest thou G611 nothing? G3756 G3762 behold G2396 how many things G4214 they witness G2649 against thee. G4675 But G1161 Jesus G2424 yet G3765 answered G611 nothing; G3762 so G5620 that Pilate G4091 marvelled. G2296
And G2532 when G1722 he G846 was accused G2723 of G5259 the chief priests G749 and G2532 elders, G4245 he answered G611 nothing. G3762 Then G5119 said G3004 Pilate G4091 unto him, G846 Hearest thou G191 not G3756 how many things G4214 they witness against G2649 thee? G4675 And G2532 he answered G3756 G611 him G846 to G4314 never G3761 a G1520 word; G4487 insomuch G5620 that the governor G2232 marvelled G2296 greatly. G3029
And said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 he that should come, G2064 or G2228 do we look G4328 for another? G2087 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Go G4198 and shew G518 John G2491 again G518 those things which G3739 ye do hear G191 and G2532 see: G991 The blind G5185 receive their sight, G308 and G2532 the lame G5560 walk, G4043 the lepers G3015 are cleansed, G2511 and G2532 the deaf G2974 hear, G191 the dead G3498 are raised up, G1453 and G2532 the poor G4434 have the gospel preached to them. G2097
For unto us a child H3206 is born, H3205 unto us a son H1121 is given: H5414 and the government H4951 shall be upon his shoulder: H7926 and his name H8034 shall be called H7121 Wonderful, H6382 Counsellor, H3289 The mighty H1368 God, H410 The everlasting H5703 Father, H1 The Prince H8269 of Peace. H7965 Of the increase H4766 of his government H4951 and peace H7965 there shall be no end, H7093 upon the throne H3678 of David, H1732 and upon his kingdom, H4467 to order H3559 it, and to establish H5582 it with judgment H4941 and with justice H6666 from henceforth even for H5704 ever. H5769 The zeal H7068 of the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 will perform H6213 this.
[[To the chief Musician, H5329 even to Jeduthun, H3038 A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 I said, H559 I will take heed H8104 to my ways, H1870 that I sin H2398 not with my tongue: H3956 I will keep H8104 my mouth H6310 with a bridle, H4269 while the wicked H7563 is before me. I was dumb H481 with silence, H1747 I held my peace, H2814 even from good; H2896 and my sorrow H3511 was stirred. H5916
But G1161 he held his peace, G4623 and G2532 answered G611 nothing. G3762 Again G3825 the high priest G749 asked G1905 him, G846 and G2532 said G3004 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of the Blessed? G2128 And G1161 Jesus G2424 said, G2036 I G1473 am: G1510 and G2532 ye shall see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 sitting G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of power, G1411 and G2532 coming G2064 in G3326 the clouds G3507 of heaven. G3772 Then G1161 the high priest G749 rent G1284 his G846 clothes, G5509 and saith, G3004 What G5101 need G5532 we G2192 any further G2089 witnesses? G3144
Nathanael G3482 answered G611 and G2532 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Rabbi, G4461 thou G4771 art G1488 the Son G5207 of God; G2316 thou G4771 art G1488 the King G935 of Israel. G2474 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Because G3754 I said G2036 unto thee, G4671 I saw G1492 thee G4571 under G5270 the fig tree, G4808 believest thou? G4100 thou shalt see G3700 greater things G3187 than these. G5130 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto him, G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Hereafter G737 G575 ye shall see G3700 heaven G3772 open, G455 and G2532 the angels G32 of God G2316 ascending G305 and G2532 descending G2597 upon G1909 the Son G5207 of man. Commentary on Mark 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter begins the account which this evangelist gives of the death and sufferings of our Lord Jesus, which we are all concerned to be acquainted, not only with the history of, but with the mystery of. Here is,
Most of which passages we had before, Mt. 26.
Mar 14:1-11
We have here instances,
Now,
Now see,
Mar 14:12-31
In these verses we have,
Now, in answer to their enquiry, Christ saith that,
But Christ encourages them with a promise that they shall rally again, shall return both to their duty and to their comfort (v. 28); "After I am risen, I will gather you in from all the places wither you are scattered, Eze. 34:12. I will go before you into Galilee, will see our friends, and enjoy one another there.'
Mar 14:32-42
Christ is here entering upon his sufferings, and begins with those which were the sorest of all his sufferings, those in his soul. Here we have him in his agony; this melancholy story we had in Matthew; this agony in soul was the wormwood and the gall in the affliction and misery; and thereby it appeared that no sorrow was forced upon him, but that it was what he freely admitted.
Now the consideration of Christ's sufferings in his soul, and his sorrows for us, should be of use to us,
As those whom Christ loves he rebukes when they do amiss, so those whom he rebukes he counsels and comforts.
Mar 14:43-52
We have here the seizing of our Lord Jesus by the officers of the chief priests. This was what his enemies had long aimed at, they had often sent to take him; but he had escaped out of their hands, because his hour was not come, nor could they now have taken him, had he not freely surrendered himself. He began first to suffer in his soul, but afterward suffered in his body, that he might satisfy for sin, which begins in the heart, but afterwards makes the members of the body instruments of unrighteousness.
Mar 14:53-65
We have here Christ's arraignment, trial, conviction, and condemnation, in the ecclesiastical court, before the great sanhedrim, of which the high priest was president, or judge of the court; the same Caiaphas that had lately adjudged it expedient he should be put to death, guilty or not guilty (Jn. 11:50), and who therefore might justly be excepted against as partial.
Mar 14:66-72
We have here the story of Peter's denying Christ.
