21 Yet G1161 hath he G2192 not G3756 root G4491 in G1722 himself, G1438 but G235 dureth G2076 for a while: G4340 for G1161 when tribulation G2347 or G2228 persecution G1375 ariseth G1096 because G1223 of the word, G3056 by and by G2117 he is offended. G4624
But G1161 before G4253 all G537 these, G5130 they shall lay G1911 their G846 hands G5495 on G1909 you, G5209 and G2532 persecute G1377 you, delivering G3860 you up G1519 to the synagogues, G4864 and G2532 into prisons, G5438 being brought G71 before G1909 kings G935 and G2532 rulers G2232 for G1752 my G3450 name's G3686 sake. G1752 And G1161 it shall turn G576 to you G5213 for G1519 a testimony. G3142 Settle G5087 it therefore G3767 in G1519 your G5216 hearts, G2588 not G3361 to meditate before G4304 what ye shall answer: G626 For G1063 I G1473 will give G1325 you G5213 a mouth G4750 and G2532 wisdom, G4678 which G3739 all G3956 your G5213 adversaries G480 shall G1410 not G3756 be able G1410 to gainsay G471 nor G3761 resist. G436 And G1161 ye shall be betrayed G3860 both G2532 by G5259 parents, G1118 and G2532 brethren, G80 and G2532 kinsfolks, G4773 and G2532 friends; G5384 and G2532 some of G1537 you G5216 shall they cause to be put to death. G2289 And G2532 ye shall be G2071 hated G3404 of G5259 all G3956 men for G1223 my G3450 name's sake. G3686 But G2532 there shall not G3364 an hair G2359 of G1537 your G5216 head G2776 perish. G622
If any G1536 man come G2064 to G4314 me, G3165 and G2532 hate G3404 not G3756 his G1438 father, G3962 and G2532 mother, G3384 and G2532 wife, G1135 and G2532 children, G5043 and G2532 brethren, G80 and G2532 sisters, G79 yea, G2089 and G1161 his own G1438 life G5590 also, G2532 he cannot G3756 G1410 be G1511 my G3450 disciple. G3101 And G2532 whosoever G3748 doth G941 not G3756 bear G941 his G846 cross, G4716 and G2532 come G2064 after G3694 me, G3450 cannot G3756 G1410 be G1511 my G3450 disciple. G3101 For G1063 which G5101 of G1537 you, G5216 intending G2309 to build G3618 a tower, G4444 sitteth G2523 not G3780 down G2523 first, G4412 and counteth G5585 the cost, G1160 whether G1487 he have G2192 sufficient to G4314 finish G535 it? Lest G3363 haply, G3379 after he G846 hath laid G5087 the foundation, G2310 and G2532 is G2480 not G3361 able G2480 to finish G1615 it, all G3956 that behold G2334 it begin G756 to mock G1702 him, G846 Saying, G3004 This G3754 G3778 man G444 began G756 to build, G3618 and G2532 was G2480 not G3756 able G2480 to finish. G1615 Or G2228 what G5101 king, G935 going G4198 to make G4820 war G4171 against G1519 another G2087 king, G935 sitteth G2523 not G3780 down G2523 first, G4412 and consulteth G1011 whether G1487 he be G2076 able G1415 with G1722 ten G1176 thousand G5505 to meet G528 him that cometh G2064 against G1909 him G846 with G3326 twenty G1501 thousand? G5505 Or else, G1490 while the other G846 is G5607 yet G2089 a great way off, G4206 he sendeth G649 an ambassage, G4242 and desireth G2065 conditions G4314 of peace. G1515 So G3779 likewise, G3767 whosoever G3956 he be of G1537 you G5216 that G3739 forsaketh G657 not G3756 all G3956 that he hath, G5224 G1438 he cannot G3756 G1410 be G1511 my G3450 disciple. G3101
When G1161 Jesus G2424 knew G1492 in G1722 himself G1438 that G3754 his G846 disciples G3101 murmured G1111 at G4012 it, G5127 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Doth this G5124 offend G4624 you? G5209 What and G3767 if G1437 ye shall see G2334 the Son G5207 of man G444 ascend up G305 where G3699 he was G2258 before? G4386 It is G2076 the spirit G4151 that quickeneth; G2227 the flesh G4561 G3756 profiteth G5623 nothing: G3762 the words G4487 that G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 unto you, G5213 they are G2076 spirit, G4151 and G2532 they are G2076 life. G2222 But G235 there are G1526 some G5100 of G1537 you G5216 that G3739 believe G4100 not. G3756 For G1063 Jesus G2424 knew G1492 from G1537 the beginning G746 who G5101 they were G1526 that believed G4100 not, G3361 and G2532 who G5101 should G2076 betray G3860 him. G846 And G2532 he said, G3004 Therefore G1223 G5124 said I G2046 unto you, G5213 that G3754 no man G3762 can G1410 come G2064 unto G4314 me, G3165 except G3362 it were G5600 given G1325 unto him G846 of G1537 my G3450 Father. G3962
Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 Have G1586 not G3756 I G1473 chosen G1586 you G5209 twelve, G1427 and G2532 one G1520 of G1537 you G5216 is G2076 a devil? G1228 G1161 He spake G3004 of Judas G2455 Iscariot G2469 the son of Simon: G4613 for G1063 he G3778 it was that should G3195 betray G3860 him, G846 being G5607 one G1520 of G1537 the twelve. G1427
He that loveth G5368 his G846 life G5590 shall lose G622 it; G846 and G2532 he that hateth G3404 his G846 life G5590 in G1722 this G5129 world G2889 shall keep G5442 it G846 unto G1519 life G2222 eternal. G166 If G1437 any man G5100 serve G1247 me, G1698 let him follow G190 me; G1698 and G2532 where G3699 I G1473 am, G1510 there G1563 shall G2071 also G2532 my G1699 servant G1249 be: G2071 G2532 if G1437 any man G5100 serve G1247 me, G1698 him G846 will G5091 my Father G3962 honour. G5091
I G1473 am G1510 the vine, G288 ye G5210 are the branches: G2814 He that abideth G3306 in G1722 me, G1698 and I G2504 in G1722 him, G846 the same G3778 bringeth forth G5342 much G4183 fruit: G2590 for G3754 without G5565 me G1700 ye can G1410 do G4160 nothing. G3756 G3762 If G3362 a man G5100 abide G3306 not G3362 in G1722 me, G1698 he is cast G906 forth G1854 as G5613 a branch, G2814 and G2532 is withered; G3583 and G2532 men gather G4863 them, G846 and G2532 cast G906 them into G1519 the fire, G4442 and G2532 they are burned. G2545 If G1437 ye abide G3306 in G1722 me, G1698 and G2532 my G3450 words G4487 abide G3306 in G1722 you, G5213 ye shall ask G154 what G3739 G1437 ye will, G2309 and G2532 it shall be done G1096 unto you. G5213
Thou G4671 hast G2076 neither G3756 part G3310 nor G3761 lot G2819 in G1722 this G5129 matter: G3056 for G1063 thy G4675 heart G2588 is G2076 not G3756 right G2117 in the sight G1799 of God. G2316 Repent G3340 therefore G3767 of G575 this G5026 thy G4675 wickedness, G2549 and G2532 pray G1189 God, G2316 if G1487 perhaps G686 the thought G1963 of thine G4675 heart G2588 may be forgiven G863 thee. G4671 For G1063 I perceive G3708 that thou G4571 art G5607 in G1519 the gall G5521 of bitterness, G4088 and G2532 in the bond G4886 of iniquity. G93
Cast G577 not G3361 away G577 therefore G3767 your G5216 confidence, G3954 which G3748 hath G2192 great G3173 recompence of reward. G3405 For G1063 ye have G2192 need G5532 of patience, G5281 that, G2443 after ye have done G4160 the will G2307 of God, G2316 ye might receive G2865 the promise. G1860 For G1063 yet G2089 a little G3397 while, G3745 G3745 and he that shall come G2064 will come, G2240 and G2532 will G5549 not G3756 tarry. G5549 Now G1161 the just G1342 shall live G2198 by G1537 faith: G4102 but G2532 if G1437 any man draw back, G5288 my G3450 soul G5590 shall have G2106 no G3756 pleasure G2106 in G1722 him. G846 But G1161 we G2249 are G2070 not G3756 of them who draw back G5289 unto G1519 perdition; G684 but G235 of them that believe G4102 to G1519 the saving G4047 of the soul. G5590
For G1063 if these things G5023 be G5225 in you, G5213 and G2532 abound, G4121 they make G2525 you that ye shall neither G3756 be barren G692 nor G3761 unfruitful G175 in G1519 the knowledge G1922 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ. G5547 But G1063 he that G3739 lacketh G3361 G3918 these things G5023 is G2076 blind, G5185 and cannot see afar off, G3467 and hath forgotten G3024 G2983 that he was purged from G2512 his G846 old G3819 sins. G266
They went out G1831 from G1537 us, G2257 but G235 they were G2258 not G3756 of G1537 us; G2257 for G1063 if G1487 they had been G2258 of G1537 us, G2257 they would G302 no doubt have continued G3306 with G3326 us: G2257 but G235 they went out, that G2443 they might be made manifest G5319 that G3754 they were G1526 not G3756 all G3956 of G1537 us. G2257 But G2532 ye G5210 have G2192 an unction G5545 from G575 the Holy One, G40 and G2532 ye know G1492 all things. G3956
For what is the hope H8615 of the hypocrite, H2611 though he hath gained, H1214 when God H433 taketh away H7953 his soul? H5315 Will God H410 hear H8085 his cry H6818 when trouble H6869 cometh H935 upon him? Will he delight H6026 himself in the Almighty? H7706 will he always H6256 call H7121 upon God? H433
Blessed G3107 are they which are persecuted G1377 for G1752 righteousness' sake: G1343 for G3754 theirs G846 is G2076 the kingdom G932 of heaven. G3772 Blessed G3107 are ye, G2075 when G3752 men shall revile G3679 you, G5209 and G2532 persecute G1377 you, and G2532 shall say G2036 all manner G3956 of evil G4190 G4487 against G2596 you G5216 falsely, G5574 for my sake. G1752 G1700 Rejoice, G5463 and G2532 be exceeding glad: G21 for G3754 great G4183 is your G5216 reward G3408 in G1722 heaven: G3772 for G1063 so G3779 persecuted they G1377 the prophets G4396 which G3588 were before G4253 you. G5216
Many G4183 will say G2046 to me G3427 in G1722 that G1565 day, G2250 Lord, G2962 Lord, G2962 have we G4395 not G3756 prophesied G4395 in thy G4674 name? G3686 and G2532 in thy G4674 name G3686 have cast out G1544 devils? G1140 and G2532 in thy G4674 name G3686 done G4160 many G4183 wonderful works? G1411 And G2532 then G5119 will I profess G3670 unto them, G846 G3754 I never G3763 knew G1097 you: G5209 depart G672 from G575 me, G1700 ye that work G2038 iniquity. G458
And G2532 every one G3956 that heareth G191 these G5128 sayings G3056 of mine, G3450 and G2532 doeth G4160 them G846 not, G3361 shall be likened G3666 unto a foolish G3474 man, G435 which G3748 built G3618 his G846 house G3614 upon G1909 the sand: G285 And G2532 the rain G1028 descended, G2597 and G2532 the floods G4215 came, G2064 and G2532 the winds G417 blew, G4154 and G2532 beat upon G4350 that G1565 house; G3614 and G2532 it fell: G4098 and G2532 great G3173 was G2258 the fall G4431 of it. G846
He that loveth G5368 father G3962 or G2228 mother G3384 more than G5228 me G1691 is G2076 not G3756 worthy G514 of me: G3450 and G2532 he that loveth G5368 son G5207 or G2228 daughter G2364 more than G5228 me G1691 is G2076 not G3756 worthy G514 of me. G3450 And G2532 he G3739 that taketh G2983 not G3756 his G846 cross, G4716 and G2532 followeth G190 after G3694 me, G3450 is G2076 not G3756 worthy G514 of me. G3450 He that findeth G2147 his G846 life G5590 shall lose G622 it: G846 and G2532 he that loseth G622 his G846 life G5590 for my G1700 sake G1752 shall find G2147 it. G846
Then G5119 said G2036 Jesus G2424 unto his G846 disciples, G3101 If any G1536 man will G2309 come G2064 after G3694 me, G3450 let him deny G533 himself, G1438 and G2532 take up G142 his G846 cross, G4716 and G2532 follow G190 me. G3427 For G1063 whosoever G3739 G302 will G2309 save G4982 his G846 life G5590 shall lose G622 it: G846 and G1161 whosoever G3739 G302 will lose G622 his G846 life G5590 for G1752 my G1700 sake G1752 shall find G2147 it. G846 For G1063 what G5101 is a man G444 profited, G5623 if G1437 he shall gain G2770 the whole G3650 world, G2889 and G1161 lose G2210 his own G846 soul? G5590 or G2228 what G5101 shall a man G444 give G1325 in exchange G465 for his G846 soul? G5590
Then G5119 shall they deliver G3860 you G5209 up G3860 to G1519 be afflicted, G2347 and G2532 shall kill G615 you: G5209 and G2532 ye shall be G2071 hated G3404 of G5259 all G3956 nations G1484 for G1223 my G3450 name's sake. G3686 And G2532 then G5119 shall many G4183 be offended, G4624 and G2532 shall betray G3860 one another, G240 and G2532 shall hate G3404 one another. G240
And G2532 when he had called G4341 the people G3793 unto him with G4862 his G846 disciples G3101 also, he said G2036 unto them, G846 Whosoever G3748 will G2309 come G2064 after G3694 me, G3450 let him deny G533 himself, G1438 and G2532 take up G142 his G846 cross, G4716 and G2532 follow G190 me. G3427 For G1063 whosoever G3739 G302 will G2309 save G4982 his G846 life G5590 shall lose G622 it; G846 but G1161 whosoever G3739 G302 shall lose G622 his G846 life G5590 for G1752 my sake G1700 and G2532 the gospel's, G2098 the same G3778 shall save G4982 it. G846 For G1063 what G5101 shall it profit G5623 a man, G444 if G1437 he shall gain G2770 the whole G3650 world, G2889 and G2532 lose G2210 his own G846 soul? G5590
Now G1161 the brother G80 shall betray G3860 the brother G80 to G1519 death, G2288 and G2532 the father G3962 the son; G5043 and G2532 children G5043 shall rise up G1881 against G1909 their parents, G1118 and G2532 shall cause G2289 them G846 to be put to death. G2289 And G2532 ye shall be G2071 hated G3404 of G5259 all G3956 men for G1223 my G3450 name's sake: G1223 G3686 but G1161 he that shall endure G5278 unto G1519 the end, G5056 the same G3778 shall be saved. G4982
And G1161 he said G3004 to G4314 them all, G3956 If any man G1536 will G2309 come G2064 after G3694 me, G3450 let him deny G533 himself, G1438 and G2532 take up G142 his G846 cross G4716 daily, G2250 G2596 and G2532 follow G190 me. G3427 For G1063 whosoever G3739 G302 will G2309 save G4982 his G846 life G5590 shall lose G622 it: G846 but G1161 whosoever G3739 G302 will lose G622 his G846 life G5590 for my G1700 sake, G1752 the same G3778 shall save G4982 it. G846 For G1063 what G5101 is G5623 a man G444 advantaged, G5623 if he gain G2770 the whole G3650 world, G2889 and G1161 lose G622 himself, G1438 or G2228 be cast away? G2210

Commentary on Matthew 13 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 13
In this chapter, we have,
Mat 13:1-23
We have here Christ preaching, and may observe,
To this question Christ answers largely, v. 11-17, where he tells them, that therefore he preached by parables, because thereby the things of God were made more plain and easy to them who were willingly ignorant; and thus the gospel would be a savour of life to some, and of death to others. A parable, like the pillar of cloud and fire, turns a dark side towards Egyptians, which confounds them, but a light side towards Israelites, which comforts them, and so answers a double intention. The same light directs the eyes of some, but dazzles the eyes of others. Now,
Now in this the scripture would be fulfilled, v. 14, 15. It is quoted from Isa. 6:9, 10. The evangelical prophet that spoke most plainly of gospel grace, foretold the contempt of it, and the consequences of that contempt. It is referred to no less than six times in the New Testament, which intimates, that in gospel times spiritual judgments would be most common, which make least noise, but are most dreadful. That which was spoken of the sinners in Isaiah's time was fulfilled in those in Christ's time, and it is still fulfilling every day; for while the wicked heart of man keeps up the same sin, the righteous hand of God inflicts the same punishment. Here is,
Note,
The parable of the sower is plain enough, v. 3-9. The exposition of it we have from Christ himself, who knew best what was his own meaning. The disciples, when they asked, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? (v. 10), intimated a desire to have the parable explained for the sake of the people; nor was it any disparagement to their own knowledge to desire it for themselves. Our Lord Jesus kindly took the hint, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the parable, directing his discourse to the disciples, but in the hearing of the multitude, for we have not the account of his dismissing them till v. 36. "Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower (v. 18); you have heard it, but let us go over it again.' Note, It is of good use, and would contribute much to our understanding the word and profiting by it, to hear over again what we have heard (Phil. 3:1); "You have heard it, but hear the interpretation of it.' Note, Then only we hear the word aright, and to good purpose, when we understand what we hear; it is no hearing at all, if it be not with understanding, Neh. 8:2. It is God's grace indeed that gives the understanding, but it is our duty to give our minds to understand.
Let us therefore compare the parable and the exposition.
Now observe the characters of these four sorts of ground.
Observe
Now what are these choking thorns?
Now that which distinguished this good ground from the rest, was, in one word, fruitfulness. By this true Christians are distinguished from hypocrites, that they bring forth the fruits of righteousness; so shall ye be my disciples, Jn. 15:8. He does not say that this good ground has no stones in it, or no thorns; but there were none that prevailed to hinder its fruitfulness. Saints, in this world, are not perfectly free from the remains of sin; but happily freed from the reign of it.
The hearers represented by the good ground are,
Mat 13:24-43
In these verses, we have,
Observe,
The disciples' request to their Master was, Declare unto us the parable of the tares. This implied an acknowledgement of their ignorance, which they were not ashamed to make. It is probable they apprehended the general scope of the parable, but they desired to understand it more particularly, and to be assured that they took it right. Note, Those are rightly disposed for Christ's teaching, that are sensible of their ignorance, and sincerely desirous to be taught. He will teach the humble (Ps. 25:8, 9), but will for this be enquired of. If any man lack instruction, let him ask it of God. Christ had expounded the foregoing parable unasked, but for the exposition of this they ask him. Note, The mercies we have received must be improved, both for direction what to pray for, and for our encouragement in prayer. The first light and the first grace are given in a preventing way, further degrees of both which must be daily prayed for.
Let us go over the particulars of the exposition of the parable.
Now concerning the sowing of the tares, observe in the parable,
In the explanation of the parable, this is gloriously represented (v. 43); Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
Now concerning the work of the gospel, observe,
Mat 13:44-52
We have four short parables in these verses.
Note,
Mat 13:53-58
We have here Christ in his own country. He went about doing good, yet left not any place till he had finished his testimony there at that time.
