20 And G2532 they did G5315 all G3956 eat, G5315 and G2532 were filled: G5526 and G2532 they took up G142 of the fragments G2801 that remained G4052 twelve G1427 baskets G2894 full. G4134
So G1161 they did eat, G5315 and G2532 were filled: G5526 and G2532 they took up G142 of the broken G2801 meat that was left G4051 seven G2033 baskets. G4711 And G1161 they that had eaten G5315 were G2258 about G5613 four thousand: G5070 and G2532 he sent G630 them G846 away. G630
And G2532 they did G5315 all G3956 eat, G5315 and G2532 were filled. G5526 And G2532 they took up G142 twelve G1427 baskets G2894 full G4134 of the fragments, G2801 and G2532 of G575 the fishes. G2486 And G2532 they that did eat G5315 of the loaves G740 were G2258 about G5616 five thousand G4000 men. G435
Which when G1161 Jesus G2424 perceived, G1097 he said G2036 unto them, G846 O ye of little faith, G3640 why G5101 reason ye G1260 among G1722 yourselves, G1438 because G3754 ye have brought G2983 no G3756 bread? G740 Do ye G3539 not yet G3768 understand, G3539 neither G3761 remember G3421 the five G4002 loaves G740 of the five thousand, G4000 and G2532 how many G4214 baskets G2894 ye took up? G2983 Neither G3761 the seven G2033 loaves G740 of the four thousand, G5070 and G2532 how many G4214 baskets G4711 ye took up? G2983
And G1161 Jesus G2424 took G2983 the loaves; G740 and G2532 when he had given thanks, G2168 he distributed G1239 to the disciples, G3101 and G1161 the disciples G3101 to them that were set down; G345 and G2532 likewise G3668 of G1537 the fishes G3795 as much as G3745 they would. G2309 When G1161 G5613 they were filled, G1705 he said G3004 unto his G846 disciples, G3101 Gather up G4863 the fragments G2801 that remain, G4052 that nothing G3363 G5100 be lost. G622 Therefore G3767 they gathered them together, G4863 and G2532 filled G1072 twelve G1427 baskets G2894 with the fragments G2801 of G1537 the five G4002 barley G2916 loaves, G740 which G3739 remained over and above G4052 unto them that had eaten. G977 Then G3767 those men, G444 when they had seen G1492 the miracle G4592 that G3739 Jesus G2424 did, G4160 said, G3004 This G3754 G3778 is G2076 of a truth G230 that prophet G4396 that should come G2064 into G1519 the world. G2889
And G2532 they reasoned G1260 among G4314 themselves, G240 saying, G3004 It is because G3754 we have G2192 no G3756 bread. G740 And G2532 when Jesus G2424 knew G1097 it, he saith G3004 unto them, G846 Why G5101 reason ye, G1260 because G3754 ye have G2192 no G3756 bread? G740 perceive ye G3539 not yet, G3768 neither G3761 understand? G4920 have ye G2192 your G5216 heart G2588 yet G2089 hardened? G4456 Having G2192 eyes, G3788 see ye G991 not? G3756 and G2532 having G2192 ears, G3775 hear ye G191 not? G3756 and G2532 do ye G3421 not G3756 remember? G3421 When G3753 I brake G2806 the five G4002 loaves G740 among G1519 five thousand, G4000 how many G4214 baskets G2894 full G4134 of fragments G2801 took ye up? G142 They say G3004 unto him, G846 Twelve. G1427 And G1161 when G3753 the seven G2033 among G1519 four thousand, G5070 how many G4214 baskets G4711 full G4138 of fragments G2801 took ye up? G142 And G1161 they said, G2036 Seven. G2033 And G2532 he said G3004 unto them, G846 How G4459 is it that ye do G4920 not G3756 understand? G4920
And G2532 they did G5315 all G3956 eat, G5315 and G2532 were filled: G5526 and G2532 they took up G142 of the broken G2801 meat that was left G4052 seven G2033 baskets G4711 full. G4134 And G1161 they that did eat G2068 were G2258 four thousand G5070 men, G435 beside G5565 women G1135 and G2532 children. G3813
Then said H559 I, Ah H162 Lord H136 GOD! H3069 behold, my soul H5315 hath not been polluted: H2930 for from my youth H5271 up even till now have I not eaten H398 of that which dieth of itself, H5038 or is torn in pieces; H2966 neither came H935 there abominable H6292 flesh H1320 into my mouth. H6310 Then he said H559 unto me, Lo, H7200 I have given H5414 thee cow's H1241 dung H6832 H6832 for man's H120 dung, H1561 and thou shalt prepare H6213 thy bread H3899 therewith. Moreover he said H559 unto me, Son H1121 of man, H120 behold, I will break H7665 the staff H4294 of bread H3899 in Jerusalem: H3389 and they shall eat H398 bread H3899 by weight, H4948 and with care; H1674 and they shall drink H8354 water H4325 by measure, H4884 and with astonishment: H8078
And his servitor H8334 said, H559 What, should I set H5414 this before H6440 an hundred H3967 men? H376 He said again, H559 Give H5414 the people, H5971 that they may eat: H398 for thus saith H559 the LORD, H3068 They shall eat, H398 and shall leave H3498 thereof. So he set H5414 it before H6440 them, and they did eat, H398 and left H3498 thereof, according to the word H1697 of the LORD. H3068
Now there cried H6817 a certain H259 woman H802 of the wives H802 of the sons H1121 of the prophets H5030 unto Elisha, H477 saying, H559 Thy servant H5650 my husband H376 is dead; H4191 and thou knowest H3045 that thy servant H5650 did fear H3373 the LORD: H3068 and the creditor H5383 is come H935 to take H3947 unto him my two H8147 sons H3206 to be bondmen. H5650 And Elisha H477 said H559 unto her, What shall I do H6213 for thee? tell H5046 me, what hast H3426 thou in the house? H1004 And she said, H559 Thine handmaid H8198 hath not any thing in the house, H1004 save a pot H610 of oil. H8081 Then he said, H559 Go, H3212 borrow H7592 thee vessels H3627 abroad H2351 of all thy neighbours, H7934 even empty H7386 vessels; H3627 borrow not a few. H4591 And when thou art come in, H935 thou shalt shut H5462 the door H1817 upon thee and upon thy sons, H1121 and shalt pour out H3332 into all those vessels, H3627 and thou shalt set aside H5265 that which is full. H4392 So she went H3212 from him, and shut H5462 the door H1817 upon her and upon H1157 her sons, H1121 who H1992 brought H5066 the vessels to her; and she poured out. H3332 And it came to pass, when the vessels H3627 were full, H4390 that she said H559 unto her son, H1121 Bring H5066 me yet a vessel. H3627 And he said H559 unto her, There is not a vessel H3627 more. And the oil H8081 stayed. H5975 Then she came H935 and told H5046 the man H376 of God. H430 And he said, H559 Go, H3212 sell H4376 the oil, H8081 and pay H7999 thy debt, H5386 and live H2421 thou and thy children H1121 of the rest. H3498
And she said, H559 As the LORD H3068 thy God H430 liveth, H2416 I have H3426 not a cake, H4580 but an handful H4393 H3709 of meal H7058 in a barrel, H3537 and a little H4592 oil H8081 in a cruse: H6835 and, behold, I am gathering H7197 two H8147 sticks, H6086 that I may go in H935 and dress H6213 it for me and my son, H1121 that we may eat H398 it, and die. H4191 And Elijah H452 said H559 unto her, Fear H3372 not; go H935 and do H6213 as thou hast said: H1697 but make H6213 me thereof H8033 a little H6996 cake H5692 first, H7223 and bring H3318 it unto me, and after H314 make H6213 for thee and for thy son. H1121 For thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 The barrel H3537 of meal H7058 shall not waste, H3615 neither shall the cruse H6835 of oil H8081 fail, H2637 until the day H3117 that the LORD H3068 sendeth H5414 rain H1653 upon H6440 the earth. H127 And she went H3212 and did H6213 according to the saying H1697 of Elijah: H452 and she, and he, and her house, H1004 did eat H398 many days. H3117 And the barrel H3537 of meal H7058 wasted H3615 not, neither did the cruse H6835 of oil H8081 fail, H2638 according to the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 which he spake H1696 by H3027 Elijah. Commentary on Matthew 14 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
CHAPTER 14
Mt 14:1-12. Herod Thinks Jesus a Resurrection of the Murdered Baptist—Account of His Imprisonment and Death. ( = Mr 6:14-29; Lu 9:7-9).
The time of this alarm of Herod Antipas appears to have been during the mission of the Twelve, and shortly after the Baptist—who had been in prison for probably more than a year—had been cruelly put to death.
Herod's Theory of the Works of Christ (Mt 14:1, 2).
1. At that time Herod the tetrarch—Herod Antipas, one of the three sons of Herod the Great, and own brother of Archelaus (Mt 2:22), who ruled as ethnarch over Galilee and Perea.
heard of the fame of Jesus—"for His name was spread abroad" (Mr 6:14).
2. And said unto his servants—his counsellors or court-ministers.
This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, &c.—The murdered prophet haunted his guilty breast like a specter and seemed to him alive again and clothed with unearthly powers in the person of Jesus.
Account of the Baptist's Imprisonment and Death (Mt 14:3-12). For the exposition of this portion, see on Mr 6:17-29.

For the exposition of this section—one of the very few where all the four Evangelists run parallel—see on Mr 6:30-44.
Mt 14:22-26. Jesus Crosses to the Western Side of the Lake Walking on the Sea—Incidents on Landing. ( = Mr 6:45; Joh 6:15-24).
For the exposition, see on Joh 6:15-24.
28. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is thou, bid me come to thee on the water—(Also see on Mr 6:50.)
29. And he said, Come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat. he walked on the water, to go to Jesus—(Also see on Mr 6:50.)
30. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me—(Also see on Mr 6:50.)
31. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?—(Also see on Mr 6:50.)
32. And when they had come into the boat, the wind ceased—(Also see on Mr 6:50.)
