18 But all the women H802 children, H2945 that have not known H3045 a man H2145 by lying H4904 with him, keep alive H2421 for yourselves.
When thou goest forth H3318 to war H4421 against thine enemies, H341 and the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath delivered H5414 them into thine hands, H3027 and thou hast taken H7617 them captive, H7628 And seest H7200 among the captives H7633 a beautiful H8389 H3303 woman, H802 and hast a desire H2836 unto her, that thou wouldest have her H3947 to thy wife; H802 Then thou shalt bring H935 her home H8432 to thine house; H1004 and she shall shave H1548 her head, H7218 and pare H6213 her nails; H6856 And she shall put H5493 the raiment H8071 of her captivity H7628 from off her, and shall remain H3427 in thine house, H1004 and bewail H1058 her father H1 and her mother H517 a full H3117 month: H3391 and after H310 that thou shalt go H935 in unto her, and be her husband, H1166 and she shall be thy wife. H802 And it shall be, if thou have no delight H2654 in her, then thou shalt let her go H7971 whither she will; H5315 but thou shalt not sell H4376 her at all H4376 for money, H3701 thou shalt not make merchandise H6014 of her, because H834 thou hast humbled H6031 her.
And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 carried away captive H7617 of their brethren H251 two hundred H3967 thousand, H505 women, H802 sons, H1121 and daughters, H1323 and took also away H962 much H7227 spoil H7998 from them, and brought H935 the spoil H7998 to Samaria. H8111 But a prophet H5030 of the LORD H3068 was there, whose name H8034 was Oded: H5752 and he went out H3318 before H6440 the host H6635 that came H935 to Samaria, H8111 and said H559 unto them, Behold, because the LORD H3068 God H430 of your fathers H1 was wroth H2534 with Judah, H3063 he hath delivered H5414 them into your hand, H3027 and ye have slain H2026 them in a rage H2197 that reacheth up H5060 unto heaven. H8064 And now ye purpose H559 to keep under H3533 the children H1121 of Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 for bondmen H5650 and bondwomen H8198 unto you: but are there not with you, even H7535 with you, sins H819 against the LORD H3068 your God? Commentary on Numbers 31 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 31
This chapter belongs to "the book of the wars of the Lord,' in which it is probable it was inserted. It is the history of a holy war, a war with Midian. Here is,
Num 31:1-6
Here,
Num 31:7-12
Here is,
Num 31:13-24
We have here the triumphant return of the army of Israel from the war with Midian, and here,
Num 31:25-47
We have here the distribution of the spoil which was taken in this expedition against Midian. God himself directed how it should be distributed, and Moses and Eleazar did according to the directions, and thus unhappy contests among themselves were prevented and the victory was made to turn to the common benefit. It was fit that he who gave them the prey should order the disposal of it. All we have is from God, and therefore must be subject to his will.
Num 31:48-54
Here is a great example of piety and devotion in the officers of the army, the colonels, that are called captains of thousands, and the inferior officers that were captains of hundreds; they came to Moses as their general and commander-in-chief, and, though he was now going off the stage they very humbly and respectfully addressed themselves to him, calling themselves his servants; the honours they had won did not puff them up, so as to make them forget their duty to him. Observe in their address to them,
