21 My son, H1121 let not them depart H3868 from thine eyes: H5869 keep H5341 sound wisdom H8454 and discretion: H4209
And these words, H1697 which I command H6680 thee this day, H3117 shall be in thine heart: H3824 And thou shalt teach them diligently H8150 unto thy children, H1121 and shalt talk H1696 of them when thou sittest H3427 in thine house, H1004 and when thou walkest H3212 by the way, H1870 and when thou liest down, H7901 and when thou risest up. H6965 And thou shalt bind H7194 them for a sign H226 upon thine hand, H3027 and they shall be as frontlets H2903 between thine eyes. H5869 And thou shalt write H3789 them upon the posts H4201 of thy house, H1004 and on thy gates. H8179
And he said H559 unto them, Set H7760 your hearts H3824 unto all the words H1697 which I testify H5749 among you this day, H3117 which ye shall command H6680 your children H1121 to observe H8104 to do, H6213 all the words H1697 of this law. H8451 For it is not a vain H7386 thing H1697 for you; because it is your life: H2416 and through this thing H1697 ye shall prolong H748 your days H3117 in the land, H127 whither ye go over H5674 Jordan H3383 to possess H3423 it.
Therefore G1223 G5124 we G2248 ought G1163 to give the more earnest G4056 heed G4337 to the things which we have heard, G191 lest at any time G3379 we should let them slip. G3901 For G1063 if G1487 the word G3056 spoken G2980 by G1223 angels G32 was G1096 stedfast, G949 and G2532 every G3956 transgression G3847 and G2532 disobedience G3876 received G2983 a just G1738 recompence of reward; G3405 How G4459 shall we G2249 escape, G1628 if we neglect G272 so great G5082 salvation; G4991 which G3748 at the first G746 began G2983 to be spoken G2980 by G1223 the Lord, G2962 and was confirmed G950 unto G1519 us G2248 by G5259 them that heard G191 him;
My son, H1121 forget H7911 not my law; H8451 but let thine heart H3820 keep H5341 my commandments: H4687 For length H753 of days, H3117 and long H8141 life, H2416 and peace, H7965 shall they add H3254 to thee. Let not mercy H2617 and truth H571 forsake H5800 thee: bind H7194 them about thy neck; H1621 write H3789 them upon the table H3871 of thine heart: H3820
If G3362 a man G5100 abide G3306 not G3362 in G1722 me, G1698 he is cast G906 forth G1854 as G5613 a branch, G2814 and G2532 is withered; G3583 and G2532 men gather G4863 them, G846 and G2532 cast G906 them into G1519 the fire, G4442 and G2532 they are burned. G2545 If G1437 ye abide G3306 in G1722 me, G1698 and G2532 my G3450 words G4487 abide G3306 in G1722 you, G5213 ye shall ask G154 what G3739 G1437 ye will, G2309 and G2532 it shall be done G1096 unto you. Commentary on Proverbs 3 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 3
This chapter is one of the most excellent in all this book, both for argument to persuade us to be religious and for directions therein.
From all this it appears what a tendency religion has to make men both blessed and blessings.
Pro 3:1-6
We are here taught to live a life of communion with God; and without controversy great is this mystery of godliness, and of great consequence to us, and, as is here shown, will be of unspeakable advantage.
Pro 3:7-12
We have here before us three exhortations, each of them enforced with a good reason:-
Pro 3:13-20
Solomon had pressed us earnestly to seek diligently for wisdom (ch. 2:1, etc.), and had assured us that we should succeed in our sincere and constant pursuits. But the question is, What shall we get by it when we have found it? Prospect of advantage is the spring and spur of industry; he therefore shows us how much it will be to our profit, laying this down for an unquestionable truth, Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, that true wisdom which consists in the knowledge and love of God, and an entire conformity to all the intentions of his truths, providences, and laws. Now observe,
Pro 3:21-26
Solomon, having pronounced those happy who not only lay hold on wisdom, but retain her, here exhorts us therefore to retain her, assuring us that we ourselves shall have the comfort of doing so.
Pro 3:27-35
True wisdom consists in the due discharge of our duty towards man, as well as towards God, in honesty as well as piety, and therefore we have here divers excellent precepts of wisdom which relate to our neighbour.
