7 That they might set H7760 their hope H3689 in God, H430 and not forget H7911 the works H4611 of God, H410 but keep H5341 his commandments: H4687
And G2532 whatsoever G3739 G1437 we ask, G154 we receive G2983 of G3844 him, G846 because G3754 we keep G5083 his G846 commandments, G1785 and G2532 do G4160 those things that are pleasing G701 in his G846 sight. G1799 And G2532 this G3778 is G2076 his G846 commandment, G1785 That G2443 we should believe G4100 on the name G3686 of his G846 Son G5207 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 and G2532 love G25 one another, G240 as G2531 he gave G1325 us G2254 commandment. G1785 And G2532 he that keepeth G5083 his G846 commandments G1785 dwelleth G3306 in G1722 him, G846 and G2532 he G846 in G1722 him. G846 And G2532 hereby G1722 G5129 we know G1097 that G3754 he abideth G3306 in G1722 us, G2254 by G1537 the Spirit G4151 which G3739 he hath given G1325 us. G2254
He that hath G2192 my G3450 commandments, G1785 and G2532 keepeth G5083 them, G846 he G1565 it is G2076 that loveth G25 me: G3165 and G1161 he that loveth G25 me G3165 shall be loved G25 of G5259 my G3450 Father, G3962 and G2532 I G1473 will love G25 him, G846 and G2532 will manifest G1718 myself G1683 to him. G846 Judas G2455 saith G3004 unto him, G846 not G3756 Iscariot, G2469 Lord, G2962 how G5101 is it G1096 that G3754 thou wilt G3195 manifest G1718 thyself G4572 unto us, G2254 and G2532 not G3780 unto the world? G2889 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 If G1437 a man G5100 love G25 me, G3165 he will keep G5083 my G3450 words: G3056 and G2532 my G3450 Father G3962 will love G25 him, G846 and G2532 we will come G2064 unto G4314 him, G846 and G2532 make G4160 our abode G3438 with G3844 him. G846 He that loveth G25 me G3165 not G3361 keepeth G5083 not G3756 my G3450 sayings: G3056 and G2532 the word G3056 which G3739 ye hear G191 is G2076 not G3756 mine, G1699 but G235 the Father's G3962 which G3588 sent G3992 me. G3165
Blessed H1288 is the man H1397 that trusteth H982 in the LORD, H3068 and whose hope H4009 the LORD H3068 is. For he shall be as a tree H6086 planted H8362 by the waters, H4325 and that spreadeth out H7971 her roots H8328 by the river, H3105 and shall not see H7200 when heat H2527 cometh, H935 but her leaf H5929 shall be green; H7488 and shall not be careful H1672 in the year H8141 of drought, H1226 neither shall cease H4185 from yielding H6213 fruit. H6529
My soul H5315 waiteth for the Lord H136 more than they that watch H8104 for the morning: H1242 I say, more than they that watch H8104 for the morning. H1242 Let Israel H3478 hope H3176 in the LORD: H3068 for with the LORD H3068 there is mercy, H2617 and with him is plenteous H7235 redemption. H6304
And ye shall observe H8104 this thing H1697 for an ordinance H2706 to thee and to thy sons H1121 for H5704 ever. H5769 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come H935 to the land H776 which the LORD H3068 will give H5414 you, according as he hath promised, H1696 that ye shall keep H8104 this service. H5656 And it shall come to pass, when your children H1121 shall say H559 unto you, What mean ye by this service? H5656 That ye shall say, H559 It is the sacrifice H2077 of the LORD'S H3068 passover, H6453 who passed H6452 over the houses H1004 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 in Egypt, H4714 when he smote H5062 the Egyptians, H4714 and delivered H5337 our houses. H1004 And the people H5971 bowed the head H6915 and worshipped. H7812
And I said, H559 This is my infirmity: H2470 but I will remember the years H8141 of the right hand H3225 of the most High. H5945 I will remember H2142 H2142 the works H4611 of the LORD: H3050 surely I will remember H2142 thy wonders H6382 of old. H6924 I will meditate H1897 also of all thy work, H6467 and talk H7878 of thy doings. H5949
The Jews H3064 ordained, H6965 and took H6901 upon them, and upon their seed, H2233 and upon all such as joined H3867 themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, H5674 that they would keep H6213 these two H8147 days H3117 according to their writing, H3791 and according to their appointed time H2165 every year; H8141 H8141 And that these days H3117 should be remembered H2142 and kept H6213 throughout H1755 every generation, H1755 every family, H4940 every province, H4082 and every city; H5892 and that these days H3117 of Purim H6332 should not fail H5674 from among H8432 the Jews, H3064 nor the memorial H2143 of them perish H5486 from their seed. H2233
Thou shalt not be afraid H3372 of them: but shalt well H2142 remember H2142 what the LORD H3068 thy God H430 did H6213 unto Pharaoh, H6547 and unto all Egypt; H4714 The great H1419 temptations H4531 which thine eyes H5869 saw, H7200 and the signs, H226 and the wonders, H4159 and the mighty H2389 hand, H3027 and the stretched out H5186 arm, H2220 whereby the LORD H3068 thy God H430 brought thee out: H3318 so shall the LORD H3068 thy God H430 do H6213 unto all the people H5971 of whom thou art afraid. Commentary on Psalms 78 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 78
This psalm is historical; it is a narrative of the great mercies God had bestowed upon Israel, the great sins wherewith they had provoked him, and the many tokens of his displeasure they had been under for their sins. The psalmist began, in the foregoing psalm, to relate God's wonders of old, for his own encouragement in a difficult time; there he broke off abruptly, but here resumes the subject, for the edification of the church, and enlarges much upon it, showing not only how good God had been to them, which was an earnest of further finishing mercy, but how basely they had conducted themselves towards God, which justified him in correcting them as he did at this time, and forbade all complaints. Here is,
As the general scope of this psalm may be of use to us in the singing of it, to put us upon recollecting what God has done for us and for his church formerly, and what we have done against him, so the particulars also may be of use to us, for warning against those sins of unbelief and ingratitude which Israel of old was notoriously guilty of, and the record of which was preserved for our learning. "These things happened unto them for ensamples,' 1 Co. 10:11; Heb. 4:11.
Maschil of Asaph.
Psa 78:1-8
These verses, which contain the preface to this history, show that the psalm answers the title; it is indeed Maschil-a psalm to give instruction; if we receive not the instruction it gives, it is our own fault. Here,
Psa 78:9-39
In these verses,
Psa 78:40-72
The matter and scope of this paragraph are the same with the former, showing what great mercies God had bestowed upon Israel, how provoking they had been, what judgments he had brought upon them for their sins, and yet how, in judgment, he remembered mercy at last. Let not those that receive mercy from God be thereby emboldened to sin, for the mercies they receive will aggravate their sin and hasten the punishment of it; yet let not those that are under divine rebukes for sin be discouraged from repentance, for their punishments are means of repentance, and shall not prevent the mercy God has yet in store for them. Observe,
