14 For G1063 we know G1492 that G3754 the law G3551 is G2076 spiritual: G4152 but G1161 I G1473 am G1510 carnal, G4559 sold G4097 under G5259 sin. G266
G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto him, G846 Thou shalt love G25 the Lord G2962 thy G4675 God G2316 with G1722 all G3650 thy G4675 heart, G2588 and G2532 with G1722 all G3650 thy G4675 soul, G5590 and G2532 with G1722 all G3650 thy G4675 mind. G1271 This G3778 is G2076 the first G4413 and G2532 great G3173 commandment. G1785 And G1161 the second G1208 is like G3664 unto it, G846 G3778 Thou shalt love G25 thy G4675 neighbour G4139 as G5613 thyself. G4572 On G1722 these G5025 two G1417 commandments G1785 hang G2910 all G3650 the law G3551 and G2532 the prophets. G4396
The Pharisee G5330 stood G2476 and prayed G4336 thus G5023 with G4314 himself, G1438 God, G2316 I thank G2168 thee, G4671 that G3754 I am G1510 not G3756 as G5618 other G3062 men G444 are, extortioners, G727 unjust, G94 adulterers, G3432 or G2228 even G2532 as G5613 this G3778 publican. G5057 I fast G3522 twice G1364 in the week, G4521 I give tithes G586 of all G3956 that G3745 I possess. G2932 And G2532 the publican, G5057 standing G2476 afar off, G3113 would G2309 not G3756 lift up G1869 so much as G3761 his eyes G3788 unto G1519 heaven, G3772 but G235 smote G5180 upon G1519 his G846 breast, G4738 saying, G3004 God G2316 be merciful G2433 to me G3427 a sinner. G268 I tell G3004 you, G5213 this man G3778 went down G2597 to G1519 his G846 house G3624 justified G1344 rather than G2228 the other: G1565 for G3754 every one G3956 that exalteth G5312 himself G1438 shall be abased; G5013 and G1161 he that humbleth G5013 himself G1438 shall be exalted. G5312
For G1063 I delight G4913 in the law G3551 of God G2316 after G2596 the inward G2080 man: G444 But G1161 I see G991 another G2087 law G3551 in G1722 my G3450 members, G3196 warring against G497 the law G3551 of my G3450 mind, G3563 and G2532 bringing G163 me G3165 into captivity G163 to the law G3551 of sin G266 which G3588 is G5607 in G1722 my G3450 members. G3196 O wretched G5005 man G444 that I am! G1473 who G5101 shall deliver G4506 me G3165 from G1537 the body G4983 of this G5127 death? G2288
And G2532 I, G1473 brethren, G80 could G1410 not G3756 speak G2980 unto you G5213 as G5613 unto spiritual, G4152 but G235 as G5613 unto carnal, G4559 even as G5613 unto babes G3516 in G1722 Christ. G5547 I have fed G4222 you G5209 with milk, G1051 and G2532 not G3756 with meat: G1033 for G1063 hitherto G3768 ye were G1410 not G3768 able G1410 to bear it, neither G235 G3777 yet G2089 now G3568 are ye able. G1410 For G1063 ye are G2075 yet G2089 carnal: G4559 for G1063 whereas G3699 there is among G1722 you G5213 envying, G2205 and G2532 strife, G2054 and G2532 divisions, G1370 are ye G2075 not G3780 carnal, G4559 and G2532 walk G4043 as G2596 men? G444
Thou meetest H6293 him that rejoiceth H7797 and worketh H6213 righteousness, H6664 those that remember H2142 thee in thy ways: H1870 behold, thou art wroth; H7107 for we have sinned: H2398 in those is continuance, H5769 and we shall be saved. H3467 But we are all as an unclean H2931 thing, and all our righteousnesses H6666 are as filthy H5708 rags; H899 and we all do fade H5034 H1101 as a leaf; H5929 and our iniquities, H5771 like the wind, H7307 have taken us away. H5375
If thou buy H7069 an Hebrew H5680 servant, H5650 six H8337 years H8141 he shall serve: H5647 and in the seventh H7637 he shall go out H3318 free H2670 for nothing. H2600 If he came in H935 by himself, H1610 he shall go out H3318 by himself: H1610 if he were married, H1167 H802 then his wife H802 shall go out H3318 with him. If his master H113 have given H5414 him a wife, H802 and she have born H3205 him sons H1121 or daughters; H1323 the wife H802 and her children H3206 shall be her master's, H113 and he shall go out H3318 by himself. H1610 And if the servant H5650 shall plainly H559 say, H559 I love H157 my master, H113 my wife, H802 and my children; H1121 I will not go out H3318 free: H2670 Then his master H113 shall bring H5066 him unto the judges; H430 he shall also bring H5066 him to the door, H1817 or unto the door post; H4201 and his master H113 shall bore H7527 his ear H241 through with an aul; H4836 and he shall serve H5647 him for ever. Commentary on Romans 7 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 7
We may observe in this chapter,
Rom 7:1-6
Among other arguments used in the foregoing chapter to persuade us against sin, and to holiness, this was one (v. 14), that we are not under the law; and this argument is here further insisted upon and explained (v. 6): We are delivered from the law. What is meant by this? And how is it an argument why sin should not reign over us, and why we should walk in newness of life?
Rom 7:7-14
To what he had said in the former paragraph, the apostle here raises an objection, which he answers very fully: What shall we say then? Is the law sin? When he had been speaking of the dominion of sin, he had said so much of the influence of the law as a covenant upon that dominion that it might easily be misinterpreted as a reflection upon the law, to prevent which he shows from his own experience the great excellency and usefulness of the law, not as a covenant, but as a guide; and further discovers how sin took occasion by the commandment. Observe in particular,
Rom 7:14-25
Here is a description of the conflict between grace and corruption in the heart, between the law of God and the law of sin. And it is applicable two ways:-
