9 What is thy beloved H1730 more than another beloved, H1730 O thou fairest H3303 among women? H802 what is thy beloved H1730 more than another beloved, H1730 that thou H3602 dost so charge H7650 us?
My dove, H3123 my undefiled H8535 is but one; H259 she is the only one H259 of her mother, H517 she is the choice H1249 one of her that bare H3205 her. The daughters H1323 saw H7200 her, and blessed H833 her; yea, the queens H4436 and the concubines, H6370 and they praised H1984 her. Who is she that looketh forth H8259 as the morning, H7837 fair H3303 as the moon, H3842 clear H1249 as the sun, H2535 and terrible H366 as an army with banners? H1713
When G1161 Jesus G2424 came G2064 into G1519 the coasts G3313 of Caesarea G2542 Philippi, G5376 he asked G2065 his G846 disciples, G3101 saying, G3004 Whom G5101 do men G444 say G3004 that I G3165 the Son G5207 of man G444 am? G1511 And G1161 they said, G2036 Some say that thou art G3303 John G2491 the Baptist: G910 G1161 some, G243 Elias; G2243 and G1161 others, G2087 Jeremias, G2408 or G2228 one G1520 of the prophets. G4396 He saith G3004 unto them, G846 But G1161 whom G5101 say G3004 ye G5210 that I G3165 am? G1511 And G1161 Simon G4613 Peter G4074 answered G611 and said, G2036 Thou G4771 art G1488 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of the living G2198 God. G2316 And G2532 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G2036 unto him, G846 Blessed G3107 art thou, G1488 Simon G4613 Barjona: G920 for G3754 flesh G4561 and G2532 blood G129 hath G601 not G3756 revealed G601 it unto thee, G4671 but G235 my G3450 Father G3962 which G3588 is in G1722 heaven. G3772
But G1161 if G1499 our G2257 gospel G2098 be G2076 hid, G2572 it is G2076 hid G2572 to G1722 them that are lost: G622 In G1722 whom G3739 the god G2316 of this G5127 world G165 hath blinded G5186 the minds G3540 of them which believe not, G571 lest G1519 G3361 the light G5462 of the glorious G1391 gospel G2098 of Christ, G5547 who G3739 is G2076 the image G1504 of God, G2316 should shine G826 unto them. G846 For G1063 we preach G2784 not G3756 ourselves, G1438 but G235 Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 the Lord; G2962 and G1161 ourselves G1438 your G5216 servants G1401 for G1223 Jesus' G2424 sake. G1223 For G3754 God, G2316 who G3588 commanded G2036 the light G5457 to shine G2989 out of G1537 darkness, G4655 G3739 hath shined G2989 in G1722 our G2257 hearts, G2588 to G4314 give the light G5462 of the knowledge G1108 of the glory G1391 of God G2316 in G1722 the face G4383 of Jesus G2424 Christ. Commentary on Song of Songs 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
In this chapter we have,
Sgs 5:1
These words are Christ's answer to the church's prayer in the close of the foregoing chapter, Let my beloved come into his garden; here he has come, and lets her know it. See how ready God is to hear prayer, how ready Christ is to accept the invitations that his people give him, though we are backward to hear his calls and accept his invitations. He is free in condescending to us, while we are shy of ascending to him. Observe how the return answered the request, and outdid it.
Sgs 5:2-8
In this song of loves and joys we have here a very melancholy scene; the spouse here speaks, not to her beloved (as before, for he has withdrawn), but of him, and it is a sad story she tells of her own folly and ill conduct towards him, notwithstanding his kindness, and of the just rebukes she fell under for it. Perhaps it may refer to Solomon's own apostasy from God, and the sad effects of that apostasy after God had come into his garden, had taken possession of the temple he had built, and he had feasted with God upon the sacrifices (v. 1); however, it is applicable to the too common case both of the churches and particular believers, who by their carelessness and security provoke Christ to withdraw from them. Observe,
