1 > Out of the depths I have cried to you, Yahweh.
Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have swept over me.
> To you I do lift up my eyes, You who sit in the heavens.
He said, "I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice. For you threw me into the depths, In the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me. I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; Yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone on me. Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off. I called on your name, Yahweh, out of the lowest dungeon.
> Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh, Who walks in his ways.
> Unless Yahweh builds the house, They labor in vain who build it. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, The watchman guards it in vain.
> Those who trust in Yahweh are as Mount Zion, Which can't be moved, but remains forever.
> If it had not been Yahweh who was on our side, Let Israel now say,
The cords of death surrounded me. The floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The cords of Sheol were round about me; The snares of death came on me. In my distress I called on Yahweh, And cried to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple, My cry before him came into his ears.
> I was glad when they said to me, "Let's go to Yahweh's house!"
> I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?
You have laid me in the lowest pit, In the darkest depths. Your wrath lies heavily on me. You have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah.
You, who have shown us many and bitter troubles, You will let me live. You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.
> Save me, God, For the waters have come up to my neck! I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, And gave me a firm place to stand.

Commentary on Psalms 130 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 130
This psalm relates not to any temporal concern, either personal or public, but it is wholly taken up with the affairs of the soul. It is reckoned one of the seven penitential psalms, which have sometimes been made use of by penitents, upon their admission into the church; and, in singing it, we are all concerned to apply it to ourselves. The psalmist here expresses,
And, as in water face answers to face, so does the heart of one humble penitent to another.
A song of degrees.
