20 The multitude answered and said, `Thou hast a demon, who doth seek to kill thee?'
and many of them said, `He hath a demon, and is mad, why do ye hear him?'
The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'
and his friends having heard, went forth to lay hold on him, for they said that he was beside himself, and the scribes who `are' from Jerusalem having come down, said -- `He hath Beelzeboul,' and -- `By the ruler of the demons he doth cast out the demons.'

The chief priests and Pharisees are here in a close cabal, contriving how to suppress Christ; though this was the great day of the feast, they attended not the religious services of the day, but left them to the vulgar, to whom it was common for those great ecclesiastics to consign and turn over the business of devotion, while they thought themselves better employed in the affairs of church-policy.
